Social Studies & AVID 11
Getting Started:
Mr. Van's SS & AVID 11 is a yearlong course that combines the AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination) with the considerably packed Socials 11 course. Just for extra fun we're going to throw in the missing elements of Planning from last year. Buckle up and get ready for a wild ride. We'll be covering the Canadian political scene, Human and World Geography, and, of course, 20th century Canadian history (all the good stuff!).
Going Deeper:
SS11 is LOADED with fantastic questions from history. You're rosy image of Canada will be challenged at points throughout this course as we tackle issues like the Chinese Head Tax, treatment of Indigenous peoples, and the political climb for women that took too long. But we'll equally share the brilliance that was events like Pearson's peace keepers, our unique and appreciated individuality from Britain, the US, and the rest of the world. Canadian history is rich.
Students will be expected to work hard, but also to play hard. There's going to be academic rigor and Cornell notes, but be ready for discussions and team challenges as well. Interaction and class participation will be expected as students work together as though they themselves lived through these exciting times. If that's not enough, get ready to write. By the end of this course students will be able to write a 2,000 word paper on a topic they've covered with proper citations and scholarly research (hold off on Wikipedia pal). Woah! Talk about getting ready for post-secondary...
Helpful class Links:
Class Facebook Page. Students can share information with their peers, ask questions, collaborate, etc.
Spectrum AVID Page. Students can interact with AVID students from Spectrum from different grades. Cross-grade challenges, multi-grade field-trips, etc will all be posted here.
